[LIGHTHOUSE ROAD]
This special song was the creation of two men:
Father Joseph Mohr, who was born in Salzburg in 1792, and who
died in Wagrain, Austria in 1848;
and Franz Xaver Gruber, who was born in Hochberg,
Austria in 1787 and died in Hallein in 1863.
Joseph Mohr wrote the words to Silent Night in 1816 in Mariapfarr, Austria. Franz Gruber composed the music in 1818 in Arnsdorf.
This hymn was first sung on December 24, 1818 during midnight mass. Fr. Mohr and choirmaster Franz Gruber, along with the church choir, stood before the main altar in St. Nicholas Church (Oberndorf, Austria) and introduced the song that would resound around the world for these past 180 years and counting. Austria's gift to the world, Silent Night has been translated into more languages than any other Christmas song. Here are the lyrics to both English and German versions.

Joseph Mohr's guitar
This midi arrangement is based on the melody notes and guitar chords from Joseph Mohr's (ca. 1820) manuscript - the earliest known arrangement of "Stille Nacht." The 1818 Gruber arrangement (the original) has been missing for nearly one and a half centuries, but it may still turn up just as the Mohr manuscript turned up several years ago.
